Hearing Aids Q & A

What types of hearing aids are available and how do they work?

For those interested in hearing aids, there are three different types available: behind-the-ear (BTE), completely-in-the-canal (CIC), and in-the-ear (ITE). There will be numerous size and color options available to you. When you meet with your audiologist, they will help you decide which type of hearing aid is best for you depending on your type of hearing loss and how comfortable each kind of hearing aid feels on your ear.

Hearing aids work by enhancing the sounds that are otherwise muffled or muted in your environment. Your audiologist will program the hearing aid specifically for you and any unique difficult listening situations. At IlluminEar Tinnitus & Audiology Center, our audiologists follow best practices. This means, your prescribed programming will be verified with Real-Ear Measurements (REM) to ensure the best possible hearing performance.

IlluminEar Tinnitus & Audiology Center is family-owned and operated, which means our audiologists can work with any hearing aid manufacturer that would be best for you. We are not limited to only one or two companies. This freedom of choice allows our patients to have an active role in their treatment plan.

How do you get a hearing aid?

When you work with a skilled audiologist, the process of getting a properly fitting hearing aid is easy. First, you will complete a hearing test. If necessary, you may be referred to a physician to address potential medical concerns. Next, you will have a hearing aid consultation. The consultation typically occurs on your first visit. The audiologist will make his or her device recommendation based upon your results and lifestyle. Bring a significant other, spouse, family member, or friend because this is a great time to ask questions and explore your options. Once a selection is made, you will have a hearing aid fitting appointment. The audiologist will review how to care for and maintain your devices, and ensure the sound is clear and comfortable. Finally, you will have a follow-up appointment to determine how your hearing aid is working for you and to make fine-tuning changes as needed. Our team works hard to make the process easy for you. You will be amazed how new hearing aids can significantly improve your quality of life so you can get back to doing and hearing what you enjoy most.
