Hearing Loss Q & A

What should I do if I am experiencing hearing loss?

The first step is to contact our office to schedule an evaluation. Our staff can help determine if you are ready to see an audiologist or if a medical appointment is needed first. On rare occasions, sudden or drastic changes in hearing necessitate a prompt visit with an ENT physician. At your first visit, we will complete a hearing test and review the results and recommendations with you so that a plan of care is established.

Who is best to help with hearing loss?

The audiologists at the IlluminEar Tinnitus & Audiology Center serve the greater Austin, Texas area and have earned a reputation in the Central Medical District as one of the best healthcare facilities. Our providers are Doctors of Audiology (Au.D.) who stay current on new hearing aid and assistive listening technologies as well as aural rehabilitation treatments. To maintain our high level of care, we create individualized treatment plans based on your specific needs. Our audiologists work closely with ENT physicians to determine if medical intervention and/or hearing aids would best help your hearing loss.

What type of hearing loss is most common?

Inner ear (or sensorineural) hearing loss is the most common type of hearing loss. This is typically caused by noise exposure, genetics, or other natural changes over time. The other type of hearing loss is called conductive hearing loss. This is caused by a reduced ability for the outer and/or middle ear to transmit sound to the inner ear. These hearing losses may be due to excess ear wax, an ear infection, or some other structural change to the outer or middle ear.
